Human Rights Defenders Coalition HRDC has given President Peter Mutharika seven days to sign the electoral reforms bills passed by Parliament.
The remarks have been made by HRDC Chairperson, Timothy Mtambo, during a press briefing that was held in Lilongwe.
Mtambo said if Mutharika does not sign within 7 days, they will demonstrate and vigil at State House until Mutharika signs the bills.
“HRDC understands that the President has 21 days to sign the bills but 7 days is enough for him to sign,,”says Mtambo
He demanded that new Malawi Electoral Commissioners should be appointed in the 7 days given so that they should start preparing and putting things in place for the forthcoming election.
Commenting on the DPP and UDF Alliance, Mtambo said the 2 parties have been together for 5 years and it’s not new that they are back together now.
“It is a good thing that they have done an alliance and he encouraged other parties to do the same to reduce a number of faces on the ballot paper,” Mtambo concludes
