The Government of Germany has called for sustained momentum and continued investment in the productive use of energy as Malawi builds on gains made under the Putting Energy to Work, PEW, project.
The call has been made in Lilongwe on Thursday during the closing event of the PEW component of the Energizing Development initiative.
The initiative was co-financed by the European Union and Germany and implemented by the German development agency GIZ.
The project aimed to strengthen Malawi’s market for productive-use energy technologies and services, enabling farmers, businesses and cooperatives to adopt energy solutions that can increase productivity, create jobs and improve livelihoods.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Head of German Cooperation Susanne Meltl said the initiative had demonstrated how access to green energy can contribute to economic growth when linked to productive activities.
Meltl stressed the need to build on the gains made through the project to ensure productive use of energy continues to benefit businesses and communities beyond the programme period.
Deputy Director of Research and Development in the Ministry of Energy, Thokozani Malunga, commended the initiative for demonstrating the important role of energy in supporting Malawi’s economic transformation.
Malunga said productive use of energy is critical in helping farmers, entrepreneurs and businesses turn access to modern energy services into economic opportunities.
He said lessons and partnerships developed through the project would continue to inform government efforts to expand access to modern energy services that support economic growth.
The PEW project focused on three key areas: strengthening the supply of productive-use energy technologies, stimulating demand among potential users, and improving the enabling environment for market development.
