Center for Democracy and economic development initiatives CDEDI has written minister of lands Chimwemwe Chipungu demanding transparency on land allocations in Lilongwe.
Speaking during a press briefing in Lilongwe on Monday, CDEDI Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa requested the minister to provide a list of beneficiaries allocated land between January and July this year, declaring personal interest in the allocations and disclose gifts received since taking office.
Namiwa has also asked Chipungu to voluntarily undergo a public lifestyle audit as a test of transparency and accountability on the issue, adding the challenge follows the minister’s repeated public claims that he is committed to fighting corruption and cleaning up the Ministry of Lands.
“We want explanations on the funding with regard to the expansion of the Backyard Park Hotel, the luxury vehicles and all other assets, we need the public officials to account for their wealth, that is what we and all Malawians want” said Namiwa.
CDEDI said it demands clarity on the alleged reports that some top government officials were each allocated 15 residential plots at the prestigious ADL estate in Lumbadzi, near Kamuzu international airport in Lilongwe, while many ordinary Malawians continue to struggle to access even a single plot
According to CDEDI it intends to invoke Access to information (ATI) Act, to request public disclosure of the issues it has raised.
Namiwa said the organisation, would receive either a public appearance by the minister and or a written response with supporting documents.
