Malawi receives 11.2 million dollars drought insurance payout from African Risk Capacity

Government has received 11.2 million dollars drought insurance payout from African Risk Capacity (ARC) to enhance Malawi’s capacity in responding to eventualities caused by climate-related disasters.

The insurance payout will among other outcomes enhance food security and improve livelihoods in the communities.

Receiving the cheques at Mzuzu State lodge President Lazarus Chakwera said the payout underscores the power of collaboration in addressing challenges posed by climate-related disasters.

In his remarks ARC Board Chairperson Maxwell Mkwezalamba said the payout will cushion Malawi from El Niño effects which have affected 23 districts in the country.

He said they want those funds to help Malawi build community resilience and help farms increase food production.

Minister of Finance Simplex Chithyola Banda said the funding will significantly aid in mitigating impact of natural events that left 5.2 million people food insecure

Banda said Department of Disaster Management Affairs and World Food Programme will be responsible for implementation of initiatives of those funds.
