Government to Relocate Cyclone Survivors from Soche to Mapanga in October
Ministry of local government, unity and culture says relocation of people affected by cyclone Freddy from Soche to Mapanga will commence on 20th October
Deputy Minister of Local government, Unity and Culture Owen Chomanika revealed during a press briefing in commemoration of 2023 World Habitat Day and World Cities Day.
Chomanika said after the devastating impacts of Cyclone Freddy, Soche Hill, mountain slopes and river banks are not suitable for human settlement hence the need for all people that are in disaster prone areas to be relocated to safer areas.
He added that this will improve their living conditions and reduce their vulnerability in the event of a disaster of a similar nature and magnitude.
Chomanika said the Ministry, National Habitat Committee and Blantyre City Council have planned to host a Malawi Urban Forum to facilitate relocation of households before onset of rainy season.
Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DODMA) Commissioner, Charles Kalemba said the department will use necessary force to people who are not compliant in the relocation exercise.
Kalemba said now people in Chikwawa, Chiradzulu, Nsanje who at first did not want to move to other areas have relocated because have realised that it is for their own good to prevent loss of lives and property.
