MEC calls for comprehensive & inclusive legal reform project

Malawi Electoral Commission has called for a comprehensive and inclusive legal reform project to incorporate recent legal issues highlighted through judicial pronouncements.

MEC chairman Justice Dr Chifundo Kachale has said this during a press briefing to update Malawians on preparedness for the November 10th by-elections.

Dr Kachale said while legal disputes are inevitable in a democratic system founded upon the rule of law, credibility of MEC could suffer some harm where its decision and actions are subject to careless litigation arising from some gaps or ambiguities in critical areas of the relevant law.

“A robust and versatile legal framework is foundation to the conduct of free, fair and credible elections,” says Kachale

MEC has deferred by-election of Mangochi west, Mangochi north east and Phalombe north following a recent court ruling regarding registration of new voters and new contestants.

The commission will meanwhile conduct by-elections in Karonga central, Lilongwe North West and Makhuwila ward on 10 November
