Ministry of health has revised risk allowances for health workers.
According to secretary for health Bestone Chisamile the 1000 kwacha risk allowance has been increased to 20 000 kwacha, 1500 kwacha to 50, 000 while the 1,800 kwacha allowance to 60, 000 kwacha among others.
Chisamila said the new rates are applicable during the period of coronavirus pandemic
“The treasury has approved the revised risk allowance effective from 1st April, 2020,” says Chisamile
Reacting National Organization of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi has expressed dissatisfaction with how government is responding to concerns of health workers despite increasing risk allowances.
Speaking in an interview with radio Islam, vice president of the organization Hanna Mtemang’ombe said the working environment is unconducive to them due to lack of essential materials.
“Government should address all the requirements to protect health workers from COVID-19,” says Mtemang’ombe
Meanwhile, government has announced additional preventive measures of COVID-19 for all public servants.
In a notice to all principal secretaries chief secretary to government Lloyd Muhara says all public servants who are not providing essential services should work from home.
Muhara adds that vehicles that are not in use be parked at office premises and controlling officers ensure necessary security at their offices among others.
