Malawi Electoral Commission MEC has suspended voter registration in Blantyre city.
According to Chairperson of the commission justice Dr Jane Ansah the decision has been made to protect lives of registrants, voter registration staff and MEC property following sporadic attacks in various centres by unknown mobs.
Ansah said the mobs blamed the electoral body for continuing with voter registration amidst the threat of Covid-19 pandemic.
“However, the registration will continue in Blantyre rural and all districts which are in the first phase,” says Ansah
She said MEC on Saturday, 11th April 2020 filed an application with Supreme Court of Appeal for orders to vary the Constitutional Court order in view of the corona virus threat.
Ansah stated that the Commission will advise the nation on the future of voter registration in affected centres immediately after Supreme Court determination on the matter
Meanwhile, Human rights defenders coalition has called for urgent action on the alleged registration malpractices.
