BT rural teachers demand leave grant arrears

Teachers from Blantyre Rural have asked the District Education Manager’s office to sort out issues surrounding payment of 2014/15 leave grants.
In a letter sourced by Radio Islam dated February 20, 2015 the concerned teachers have given the district education officials the deadline of February 25 to deal with the matter otherwise they will down tools.
“The district officials should state the date when all teachers will receive their leave grants in arrears,” theletter further requests.
According to the letter, teachers who have already received their leave grants without arrears.
Government increased such grants to K28, 000 for civil servants on Grade L, K and J in 2013 but promised to pay in arrears in 2014.
Teachers on Grade L were getting K8, 500 and are supposed to get leave grant with arrears amounting to K47, 500.
Government however has been struggling to pay the leave grants to civil servants especially teachers.
Recently, Principle secretary in the ministry of education science and technology Rosemary Magaleta said the ministry had asked the ministry of finance to assist district councils with finances to solve the problem of leave grants.
