Minister calls for credible assessment of gains and losses made in HIV/AIDS response

Minister of Health, Dr Jean Kalirani has called for a credible assessment of gains and losses made in the national response to HIV/AIDS in order to better address the new underlying challenges in the fight against the pandemic.

The call has been made during the official opening of the three day Malawi’s first HIV/AIDS prevention symposium in Lilongwe. Dr Kalilani has complained that the country is still registering new HIV/AIDS infections despite that government and its partners have been implementing various HIV/AIDS programs.

She has therefore asked technocrats to be innovative by developing programs that could successfully eliminate the disease. In her remarks Board Chairperson of National Aids Commission Mara Kumbweza Banda called for strong partnership among government and health agencies when designing and implementing HIV/AIDS programs if the war against HIV/AIDS is to be won.

Malawi’s first ever HIV/AIDS prevention symposium is being held under the theme taking stock of prevention policy and implementation in Malawi international perspective getting to zero. The meeting has participants from local and international organisations involved in HIV/AIDS response.
