Man in Mulanje jailed for murder

Police in Mulanje district are keeping in custody a 25-year-old man for allegedly murdering a 5-year-old girl.

According to Mulanje police publicist, James Kadadzela, the accused who is identified as Lemani Gunda hit the victim with a wooden pole while she was playing with her friends and was left unconscious.

The girl was pronounced dead upon arrival at Phalombe District Hospital.

Then her body was referred to Mulanje District Hospital where postmortem revealed that the victim died of severe head injuries.

Commenting on the matter Kadadzela indicated that before commencing with a criminal case, police will take the accused to Zomba Mental Hospital for medical assessment as he is alleged to be mentally ill.

Both the victim and the suspect hail from Chole Village in the area of Traditional Authority Nkanda in Mulanje district.
