Irate Villagers Clash with Park Officials

Irate villagers have clashed with officials of Liwonde national park after a fisherman went missing.

Public relations officer for Machinga police constable Davie Sulumba said Charles Matthias 18 went missing on 6th September at Liwonde National Park where he went for fishing.

On that day Mathias and his friends went for fishing at Shire river within the protected area of Liwonde National Park without permit.

“Whilst there, they saw Park patrol teams; one on boat and another on Helicopter frying towards them. Sensing danger ahead, they hid underneath the reeds which are along the shire river for safety and one of them managed to swim across the river,” Sulumba explained

The patrol teams landed on where the fishermen were and they damaged the canoes which were used by the fishermen.

“It is alleged that the missing boy was arrested by the patrol teams a thing Park officials are denying,” Sulumba added.

On 11th September irate villagers went on rampage damaging and setting two guardrooms at the Park on fire hence forcing police to disperse them using teargas.
