UTM vehicles smashed
President of United Transformation Movement Dr Saulos Claus Chilima has said politics of intimidation has no place in democracy.
Chilima said this in Mangochi during the launch of UTM in the eastern region.
He made the remarks after unknown criminals burnt and smashed two cars belonging to UTM.
Meanwhile, Civil society organizations CSO’s in Malawi have called for an end to political violence and bring perpetrators to justice.
They have made the call in a statement released after two vehicles belonging to United Transformation Movement UTM have been torched by unknown criminals in Mangochi.
The vehicles were destroyed last night ahead of the launch of UTM in the district.
Reacting to this the 7 CSO’s has condemned the use of violence by any political grouping or people as the country heads towards 2019 elections.
“This is archaic politics and must not be condoned,” the CSO’s said
The CSO’s have reiterated that people in the country should focus on issue based campaign and political parties must desist from using hate speech.
They have called upon Malawi police service to investigate and bring perpetrators to justice.
The CSO’s have appealed to the youth not to be used as instruments of violence
Two vehicles of United Transformation Movement UTM have been damaged by unknown thugs in Mangochi.
The incident happened as the launch of UTM in the eastern region was expected to take place in the district on Sunday 19th August, 2018.
Public relations officer for Mangochi police inspector Rodrick Maida confirmed the incident saying police is investigating.
The vehicle for Paul Chibingu was burnt and the other for director of women in the eastern region smashed.
Reacting interim secretary general of UTM Patricia Kaliati said it shows that the party is a threat to other parties.
Meanwhile the political analyst Dr Mustafa Hussein has condemned the barbaric act.
Dr Hussein said “this is not acceptable in a democratic country.”
He therefore called upon political parties in the country to desist from such bad acts ahead of 2019 tripartite elections.
