WOJAM calls for fight against trafficking

Women Judges Association of Malawi WOJAM has called for collective efforts in the fight against human trafficking in the country.

Albalt Phikani programs officer for WOJAM made the appeal in tradition authority Mponda in Mangochi district during commemoration of day against trafficking in persons.

The function was conducted under the theme “Accelerating sustainable partnership, a key to Malawi action against trafficking in persons.”

“In 2010, 500 people were trafficked outside the country monthly and the cases have increased due to porous borders,” said Phikani.

He further said that Mangochi is one of the source districts where traffickers conduct their operations when travelling to South Africa where they are used.

Commenting manager for Rights Advance Centre in Mangochi district Madalitso Masache said the function was held in order to bring awareness to the masses on how trafficking is being conducted.

“8 cases were reported to police and traffickers were arrested,” said Masache.

He stressed the need for communities to register in national identification exercise which will help to track homes of human trafficking victims.

In 2013 UN general assembly set 30th July as a day to commemorate and raise awareness of the situation of victims of human trafficking.
