In a rare move to promote madrassa, alumni of Kanjedza madrassa in Nkanda village in the area of traditional authority Mgulumia in Machinga district have recognized the longest serving sheikh at the madrassa sheikh Issa Maulidi.
The group handed-over a brand-new bicycle and smart phone to the sheikh, as one way of appreciating his continued dedication since 1999.
In his remarks, treasurer of the grouping Daudi Pius, said sheikh Maulidi has done a commendable job in promoting Islam in the area by imparting Islamic knowledge to a lot of young people.
Pius says the group has also given all madrassa students uniforms as well as footballs and other gifts to encourage the students to attend madrassa.
He said the donations have been made, after members of the group contributed about 1 million 5 hundred thousand kwacha.
Pius said they noted that there is poor attendance of students at the Madrassa hence the decision to involve the chiefs to take part in relaying the message to encourage parents to ensure that their children are attending madrassa after circular lesson.
“We want to make sure that we should be holding such events annually after Ramadhan. Currently we are not impressed with the attendance, that’s why we decided to call the village heads and even the traditional authority as well as other parents so that we can relay that information to encourage the children to attend madrassa,” he explained.
Welcoming the gifts, sheikh Issa appreciated the group describing the gesture as one of its kind.
“To say the truth I was not expecting this to happen to me today, I am very much excited”, he said.
Sheikh Issa however expressed concern over the low turn-out of students. He blamed the parents for not encouraging their children to attend madrassa hence asking them to inspire their wards.
Traditional Authority Mgulumia commended the youth for the wonderful activity adding that it is her wish to ensure that all Muslims in the area acquire Islamic knowledge to better understand their religion.
