Makanjira Development Foundation MDF has lodged a complaint with Anti-Corruption Bureau ACB and Ministry of agriculture regarding malpractices in the process of procuring inputs under the Farm Inputs Subsidy Program FISP.
In an interview with Radio Islam MDF executive director Osman Kennedy said the foundation has been receiving reports of the malpractices from residents including purchasing the commodity at a price 4 times higher than government set price of k10 thousand.
Kennedy expressed sadness that people who are being requested to pay extra money for the subsidized farm inputs, are poor Malawians who struggle to get money.
He added that this malpractice may lead to people’s inability to buy the inputs if and eventually fail to produce enough, if they fail to pay the extra amount demanded by the official.
“We are talking of an arrangement which already considers the poverty of people in rural settings like of Makanjira where people struggle to get money. So the price of fertilizer has been subsidized but we happen to have people demanding money from beneficiaries,” said Kennedy.
Kennedy said the foundation has a list of names of officials involved in the malpractice and have since included them in the complaint.
Meanwhile, Kennedy said the Anti-Corruption Bureau has acknowledged receipting of the letter and they are yet to provide feedback on the same.
The MDF director has since expressed optimism that the case will be handled in accordance with the law.
He said the people of Makanjira want thorough investigations on the same so that the people involved must face the law.
