Ulama council of Malawi has admitted to the concerns of low salaries that are given to sheikhs in the country.
This follows the birth of movement for the welfare of sheikh being championed by various Muslims including sheikh Khatweeb Daud.
According to the council’s secretary general Sheikh Muslim Abas Vinjenje the issue at hand is sad and long overdue.
However Sheikh Vinjenje through Radio Islam’s Islamic Hard Talk program emphasized that only Muslim Association of Malawi has the mandate to engage the organisations on the matter.
He also stressed the need for a sheikh’s conference where stakeholders will discuss the welfare of sheikhs in the country.
In an interview Sheikh Khatweeb Daud said despite the pivotal roles that sheikhs play in promoting Islam, many of are facing numerous challenges including low pay checks hence the movement
Sheikh Daud said sheikhs are receiving from 40 thousand to 150 thousand kwacha per month which is too low considering the economic challenges that Malawi is facing.
He said there are a lot of qualified Malawian sheikhs that are leaving the country for greener pastures hence posing a threat on the future of Islam in Malawi.
