Speaker of Parliament Sameer Suleman has referred Constitutional Amendment Bill which seeks to allow Members of Parliament to own Constituency Development Fund CDF to Legal Affairs Committee
Presenting the bill in parliament Member of Parliament Chambulanyina Jere said the bill will help to speed up community development across the country
Jere said once the Constitutional Amendment Bill is approved members of parliament will process CDF Bill and make thorough consultation with all relevant stakeholders
Therefore Jere said will consult sister parliamentarians like Kenya which have similar concept where Malawi borrowed the idea
Making the ruling on the bill Suleman said parliament should give chance to other quarters of the society to provide their views on the same
Commenting on behalf of DPP Zomba City North MP Bester Awali said it is an important bill which seeks to guide how the funds will be utilized in a transparent manner so that development is achieved in communities
He said DPP proposed that the bill be referred to legal affairs committee for further scrutiny
Spokesperson of Malawi Congress Party on the bill Member of Parliament for Dowa East Richard Chimwendo Banda challenged civil society organisations that Members of parliament do not want to manage CDF but approve developments happening in their constituencies
