Spokesperson on finance for Malawi Congress Party Eisenhower Mkaka has said the midyear budget review statement which finance minister presented on Friday does not relieve economic burden of the country.
Speaking in parliament, Mkaka who is Member of Parliament for Lilongwe Mpenu said the budget review has strangulated economic growth with repeated layer of taxes hence not empowering citizens but draining them.
The law maker has also said the decision to increase value added tax from 16.5 to 17.5 percent is a direct attack on cost of living.
Standing on point of order Member of Parliament for Zomba Malosa Grace Kwelepeta criticized Mkaka’s statement because was allegedly involved in Sattar’s corruption case hence not the right person to criticize the budget statement
Meanwhile, UTM has said “the 2025/26 midyear budget review is not presenting a decisive break away from MCP type of economic policies and mismanagement that Malawians urgently need.”
In a statement UTM said the measures which government is using to stabilize the economy risks extending than reversing failures of the past five years.
