Lawyer accuses Malawian Judges of Corruption

Magistrates and Judges Association of Malawi MAJAM has summoned a lawyer for an interface meeting on 12 October on the remarks that chief justice is not taking action on the complaints he receives

According to a letter signed by MAJAM secretary general Peter Kandulu he the committee has been receiving some of the comments counsel Alexious Kamangira makes on Facebook regarding the judgment which judge Ken Manda made regarding the Salima Sugar case

Kandulu says among others Kamangira said many complaints are forwarded to Rezine Mzikamanda but he does not act

“MAJAM is concerned with his remarks therefore needs to interact with him in order to understand his sentiments,” says Kandulu.

Judge Justice Kenan Manda has initiated legal action against Lawyer Alexious Kamangila for defamation, seeking 250 million kwacha in damages.

The lawsuit filed by Gobz Attorneys also includes a request for an apology to be posted on Kamangila’s Facebook page and demanding him to refrain from making any further defamatory statements against Justice Mandy.

The conflict arises because Kamangila allegedly published multiple defamatory posts on his Facebook page regarding Justice Manda.

In response, Activist Lawyer Alexious Kamangila has indicated that he possesses evidence to support his claims of corruption against Justice Manda and is prepared to present this evidence in court.

“My posts on Facebook represent his opinions, which he believes are protected under freedom of expression,” Kamangira

He also criticized the lack of action by institutions such as the Judiciary, Anti-Corruption Bureau, and Parliament, suggesting that they may be complicit in the corruption within the judiciary.

On 13th September this year, High Court Justice Manda granted an injunction against Salima Sugar Company to Mukteshwar Sugar Mills Limited that prohibits the company from using its bank account.
