MEC trains accredited CSO’s on 2025 elections

Malawi Electoral Commission MEC has advised leaders of civil society Organizations CSOs accredited to conduct civic and voter education and are harboring ambitions to contest in 2025 elections to cut ties with MEC before they begin their work.

MEC commissioner Francis Kasaila has made the appeal during the official opening of orientation workshop for the accredited CSOs in southern region.

Kasaila said the commission has examples of CSO leaders that have joined mainstream politics and are contributing greatly to the country’s development hence is not stopping anyone from pursuing politics.

He said the commission expects the CSOs to be non-partisan and warned that MEC will take action on leaders conducting business in a manner that compromises integrity of electoral process because of they hold accreditation from MEC.

According to the commission the accreditation goes beyond 2025 general elections to 2029 hence requested the CSO’s to work together

MEC has also emphasized that next year’s elections be called general and not tripartite elections due to changes in electoral laws.

In his remarks Malawi Electoral Support Network coordinator Andrew Kachasu praised the commission for the timely training considering changes made in the laws since 2019 tripartite elections
