Government suspends new taxes on importation of second hand vehicles
Ministry of finance has suspended implementation of a new tax on importation of second hand vehicles following public outcry and pressure from civil society organizations
Addressing journalists in Lilongwe after meeting car dealers association of Malawi finance minister Sosten Gwengwe conceded that the new import duty rates were released without proper consultation with relevant stakeholders
Gwengwe said for the country to effect new duty rates it has to be approved by parliament which in this case was not done
Currently the minister says government will continue using the existing car import duty rates until further consultations are done
In his remarks chairperson of car dealers association of Malawi Themba Mkandawire thanked government for the initiative saying it will help to create a conducive environment for businesses in the country
