2298 prisoners pardoned in 2023 independence day celebrations

President Lazarus Chakwera has pardoned 2298 prisoners as part of 2023 independence day celebrations

Ministry of homeland security says the pardoned prisoners include the elderly, the chronically ill, female convicts who were accompanied by their children to prison and those have served half of their sentences.

Secretary of the ministry Oliver Kumbambe says the prisoners are those that have met requirements of the guidelines for the granting of the pardon and have demonstrated excellent behavioral reform while service their sentences

Meanwhile, national service of worship has been observed as part of 59^th independence anniversary
