Over 80 people die of stampede in Yemen’s charity distribution

More than 80 people have been killed and hundreds injured in a stampede in Yemen’s capital city during a charity distribution

The stampede happened late on Wednesday as hundreds of people crowded into a school to get a charitable donation of about 10 dollars.

Security officers had fired into the air in an attempt at crowd control, apparently hitting an electrical wire, which exploded and caused panic among those waiting.

More than 300 people were hurt and the disaster had “sparked nationwide anger”.

Ministry of Interior’s spokesperson described the incident as “tragic” blaming the “random distribution” of funds without coordination with local authorities.

The two merchants who organised the event had been detained but announced to pay 2,000 dollars in compensation to each family who lost a relative, while the injured would get about 400 dollars.
