Minister of justice tables Disaster risk management bill in parliament

Minister of justice and constitutional affairs has tabled the Disaster risk management bill in parliament

Presenting the bill Titus Mvalo said once passed it will help in disaster preparedness and management in future as the country faces many disasters

Mvalo cited cyclones that have devastated Malawians in recent years which have killed many people and damaged property

However, Civil Society Network on Climate Change CISONECC noted 61 areas in the disaster management bill which needed amendment before passing into law

Addressing journalists CISONECC national coordinator Julius Ng’oma said the bill was circulated to Malawians and civil society organisations on 5th April that observed areas which are not in line with current needs

Ng’oma emphasized that the organisations wanted the bill to have a commission, disaster risk management fund and not headed by a ministry

He said once passed the bill will help in preparation and prevention of disasters unlike the current law which focuses on actions to be undertaken after a calamity occurs.

In her remarks Member of Parliament for parliamentary committee on natural resources and climate change Esther Jolobala said the bill is important as it will guide on how the country will be managing disasters
