Bridges washed away in Mangochi North constituency
Communities from Traditional Authorities Makanjira and Lulanga in Mangochi North Constituency are stranded following the washing away of Lilole and Lugola bridges due to heavy rains last night.
Speaking in an interview with Radio Islam, one of the community members, Mariam Alie says people in the area have now been completely disconnected from Mangochi Boma where they mostly get their everyday commodities from.
According to her the situation is worse because the bridges have completely been damaged.
In his remarks, Member of Parliament for the area, Benedicto Chambo has confirmed the development saying he has already communicated to Roads Authority RAfor help.
However, Chambo wondered how the NRA officials will travel to the area considering the fact that this makes the number of washed away bridges to three after Nyangu which has also taken long to be replaced.
Chambo has lamented government’s delay in re-construction of bridges in the area which he said is affecting access to social amenities such as banking services, agriculture inputs, business supplies and other essential services which are not found locally.
Meanwhile, Roads Authority spokesperson Portia Kajanga, says they are in discussion with the marine department to help them reach to the area to start re-construction works on the two affected bridges.
