Ruto elected Kenya President

Kenya’s vice president William Ruto has been declared winner of presidential elections

Ruto defeated Raila Odinga, who was endorsed by the former president Uhuru Kenyatta

The Independent Electoral and boarder Commission yesterday announced William Ruto as president having amassed 50.49% of the vote.

Speaking when he addressed the press in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, Odinga said the figures which were announced are null and void and must be quashed by a court of law.

He added that Millions of Kenyans turned out in large numbers in an attempt to choose their leaders but yesterday the country’s budding democracy suffered a major setback.

Odinga has also accused Chairman of the electoral commission Wafula Chebukati of bullying election counters who disagreed with him.

He added that Unless a unanimous decision is reached on any matter, the commission will be made by a majority of the members present”, quoting from legislation, suggesting that the four out of seven dissenting electoral commissioners should have had their objections upheld.

His Azimio La Umjoa coalition party have until seven days after the election – to file a petition at Kenya’s Supreme Court.
