Malawi’s Former President Peter Mutharika in Bed

The Ant Corruption Bureau (ACB) has today failed to interrogate the former President Peter Mutharika after reportedly fallen sick.

ACB was today expected to start questioning Mutharika on how he fraudulently used his taxpayer identification number (TPIN).

Confirming the development, ACB’S Senior Public Relations Officer Speaking, Egrita Ndala, said the bureau will now wait for the doctor’s report to map the way forward.

Mutharika appeared on the virtual platform this morning but his lawyers told ACB officials that the former president is unwell.

However the bureau’s Director General Martha Chizuma told the local media that  Mutharika needed to be assessed by doctors.

Last monday, Mutharika demanded the ACB to disclose the nature of offences he is accused of and warned that if ACB chose to proceed with the interview, he would listen but will exercise his rights to remain silent.

Commenting on the right to remain silent, University of Malawi (UNIMA) Law Lecturer, Professor Edge Kanyongolo, says Mutharika has the prerogative to excise his right to remain silent adding this will not in any way affect the investigation process.

Kanyongolo says the ACB has other avenues that it can use to extract evidence on the matter.

He says his silence will not in any way affect the ACB’s investigation hence there is no need for the public to raise concerns.
