Malawi Resumes Covid 19 Vaccination Exercise

Covid-19 vaccination exercise in Malawi has resumed today after being suspended for about a month.

Ministry of Health however has urged people in the country to get vaccinated to help reduce the risk of developing severe disease, hospitalization and deaths.

Last Saturday, the country received 192,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine a development which has necessitated the country to resume the program.

Minister of Health Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda said yesterday that the vaccines have already started being distributed in districts across the country.

Kandodo Chiponda advised those that have underlying conditions, those aged 60 years and above and health workers and other frontline staff to get vaccinated.

She encouraged those that had received the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine and are due for the second dose, to visit the vaccination sites to get their second dose.

The minister also reminded people that the AstraZeneca vaccines require one to receive two doses for one to be fully protected.

Chiponda added that Malawi has also secured more doses of the vaccines and they are expected to arrive in the country in the next few weeks.

Meanwhile Blantyre District Health Office has said the exercise has begun on a high note in the district.

Director of Health and Social Services for Blantyre, Dr Gift Kawalazira says the office is impressed with number of people getting vaccinated as the exercise has rolled out today.

Dr Kawalazira added that Blantyre DHO has received about 29000 doses of the vaccine.

He has meanwhile urged Blantyre residents to go and get the jab.
