Leader of opposition in parliament implores President to ignore PAC’s recommendation of MEC Commissioners’ dismissal
Leader of opposition in parliament Kondwani Nankhumwa has implored upon President Dr Lazarus Chakwera to ignore the recommendation by Public Appointments Committee of parliament PAC but adopt legal opinion of attorney general
Nakhumwa has said this after PAC recommended to Chakwera to fire two commissioners of Malawi Electoral Commission Jean Mathanga and Linda Kunje following the leakage of the opinion of Chikosa Silungwe which ordered government to re-appoint them last year
Reacting Nankhumwa said he finds PAC’s recommendation as unjust considering that the re-appointment of Mathanga and Kunje by former president professor Peter Mutharika has many legal implications that need careful consideration
“The best way to resolve this matter is to maintain the status quo or through a judicial review,” Nankhumwa
The leader of opposition in parliament said PAC has misled the president and its decision is morally, legally and politically unjustified
According to Nankhumwa the decision is driven by hatred against democratic progressive party and anyone perceived to be its member
Chakwera did not recognize them because PAC had recommended that they were incompetent together with other former commissioners of MEC because of mismanaging the 2019 presidential elections
