United Nations UN has called on the government to put aside adequate financial resources to fully implement the National Action Plan on persons with Albinism.
UN resident coordinator for Malawi Maria Jose Torres has made the call following the recent attacks on a 92 year old woman with albinism in Mzimba.
Torres said it is sad to note that such cases arise mostly when the country prepares for elections which she said raises concerns for the safety of persons with albinism, hence condemning it in strongest terms.
“There is need to address the root cause of discrimination and violence against persons with albinism through ongoing awareness and social behavior change campaigns,” UN coordinator says
Torres then commended the Malawi Police service for its swift investigation into the case that led to the arrest of three suspects.
She has also called upon the judicial system to hold perpetrators of such crimes accountable.
