First lady advocates investing in girls
First lady Monica Chakwera says investing in young women and adolescents is the only way to address gender disparities which the country has had for many years.
Madam Chakwera was speaking during the harnessing the gender dividend to achieve Malawi vision 2063 policy dialogue in Lilongwe.
Chakwera said inequalities in education can be dealt with if women are encouraged to get educated
She stressed the need for traditional leaders to take part in enforcing education among learners.
“Young girls should abstain from sexual behaviour until they are married,” Chakwera
In her remarks Minister of gender community development and social welfare Patricia Kaliati pleaded with development partners to provide resources to Malawi for the empowerment of girls and women
UNFPA acting country representative Miranda Tabifor said Malawi should educate the girl child to achieve Malawi 2063 agenda and promised continued support
