Palestine cautions Malawi against establishing diplomatic mission in Jerusalem.

Palestine has warned Malawi against establishing diplomatic mission in Jerusalem.

The warning has been made following recent announcement by the Malawi government to open a full embassy in Jerusalem.

In a letter signed by Palestinian president Mahmood Abas, any step taken by the Malawi government to establish Diplomatic mission in Jerusalem constitutes a violation of relevant United Nations resolutions.

“Under the International laws, East Jerusalem are not legally part of Israel. Since Israel’s establishment in 1948, the US and international community have refused to recognize the sovereignty of any country to any part of Jerusalem in the absence of a permanent Arab-Israel peace agreement,” reads the letter.

He said while SADC member states continue to raise the issue of Israel’s occupation of Palestine at the United Nations, other African countries seemingly bucked under pressure to establish relations with Israel.

Chancellor College based Political scientist Ernest Thindwa concurs with Abbas and faults Tonse Alliance government for the decision.

Thindwa said other countries that have diplomatic ties with Israel have their Ambassadors sitting in countries neighboring Israel for fear of meddling in Israel’s political affairs as well as contravening United Nations Security Council resolutions.

Thindwa added that interference with these resolutions is critical for a country with under developed economy.
