Malawi elected to UN human rights council

Malawi has been elected to join UN human rights council for the next three years.

The 47 member body held the elections on Tuesday at the UN headquarters in New York.

Speaking on the development, Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation CHRR says Malawi’s inclusion in UN human rights council should be used to help citizens hold government accountable.

CHRR’S executive director, Michel Kaiyatsa, said the development shows the trust that other countries have on the country.

“This will help in improving Malawi’s visibility in terms of human rights and ensuring that they are adequately protected as well as promoted,” Kaiyatsa says

Malawi got 180 votes of about 190 votes in the secret ballot and is among four African countries which include Ivory Coast, Gabon and Senegal that have been elected in UN human rights council
