Management of Salima Sugar factory has denied journalists’ access to government led factory.
Journalists from various media houses went there as part of practical aspect of media training on social accountability organized by Malawi Economic Justice Network MEJN with financial support from IM Swidish development partners.
The training focused on implementation of Malawi Growth and Development Strategy under Green belt initiative.
As per tradition of MEJN journalists are taken on a field visit to various cites to practice what they learnt at the workshop.
When the journalists arrived at the factory at 3 pm the management asked them to wait confirmation from board of directors.
It was then that the group leader for the visit from MEJN Mike Banda sought for contacts of board of directors but was turned down.
“MEJN informed the management of the company of the visit few days before,” Banda said
Fortunately one of the journalists had the number for Charles Thupi who is secretary for the board and managed to talk to him.
However, efforts proved futile after Thupi had promised to talk to management of the factory.
The Salima Sugar factory is a flagship project under the green belt initiative in the Malawi Growth and Development strategy 3
