The Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) urged the Muslims across the country to maintain unity and peace ahead of the organization’s upcoming leadership elections.
Speaking after MAM’s annual general conference held in Blantyre, MAM spokesperson Sheikh Dinala Chabulika, told radio Islam that delegates at the general meeting agreed on a date for the elections, but was quick to highlight that the board of trustees who are eligible to run the elections, were the ones to announce the agreed date to the public in the near future.
“Alhamdulillah the meeting has gone well and the delegates have deliberated on so many issues but the main agenda was the election and they have agreed on a date but I can not announce the date now because the board of trustees are the ones to run the elections so they are the ones also to announce that date because I am only an executive members and spokesperson,” sheikh Chabulika clarified.
He also assured the Muslims who are eager or are willing to contest that all procedures adding that members at the meeting agreed on the conditions for eligibility as prescribed in the 1994 constitution, as well as the nomination fees to be communicated by the board of trustees in due course.
But Sheikh Chabulika advised Muslims in Malawi to avoid insulting and intimidating one another on social media highlighting that MAM is about building the Islamic faith and not creating enmity.
“Another important message is that MAM is an organisation that was established to build the religion of Islam so why intimidating each other in the social media, that is not good because whoever is going to win the election, will have taken a very big responsibility to lead Muslim Association and look after the welfare of Muslims so we need to be responsible until the election is over,” said sheikh Chabulika.
He stressed that Islam promotes peace hence Muslims must set a good example as they prepare to elect the office bearers. He added that the organisation’s board of trustees are ready to run the election as prescribed in the supreme laws of the organisation and in accordance with the court ruling.
One of the delegates Sheikh Ibrahim Sadala who is also the Central Region Chairperson commended the delegates for showing unity, saying Islam has progressed in the region because of that spirit.
“Islam has developed in the central region and frankly speaking, in the central region we mosques everywhere, we have boreholes all because of the Muslim Association of Malawi leadership as well the unity that exists, to say the truth, districts in the central region are far away from Blantyre but we are able to receive developments from MAM,” he said.
He added that at the meeting, the delegates have demonstrated oneness hence asking the Muslim community to maintain love, peace and unity for the betterment of Islam.
The election scheduled to take place next month on a date to be announced by the board of trustees, will take place following the court ruling which cancelled the previous elections citing anomalies in the electoral procedure.
