Islamic Schools in the country have again done well in the 2025/2026 National Council for Higher Education NCHE Public University selection following the release of the 2025/2026 Public university selection.
Radio established that schools like Mai Halima has 15 students selected to different public universities, Mama Khadija private secondary school 50, Dedza and Girls Islamic Secondary School 23 among others.
Speaking in separate interviews on Thursday, Sayid Witness, Albarakah Charity Trust Executive Director Proprietors of Mama Khadija and Mai Halima Girls Secondary School head teacher, Tonny Sayyid said the results are a testament of the schools’ commitment to providing girls with excellent education.
According to the two, discipline and coordination between parents and school authorities is among the major contributing factors to the success.
Witness said the school has maintained the number of students selected to various public universities at 50 adding the number is expected to increase when they add with those selected on Open Distance Learning window.
“One thing in education you know it is process, it’s kind of trying to make sure that teachers are recognized and then we try to make sure that we promote oneness and the other thing most importantly is that we have hard working teachers, a hard-working team including the management of Mama Khadija”, he explained.
“Based on the same we are on it to make sure that we continue supporting a girl child because Muslims we know that educating a girl child is equal to educating the generation so we believe to say that we promote and we keep encouraging a girl child to remain in school that’s why we have this education institution in Mangochi”, added Witness.
He said at a time when there are many factors limiting girls access to education; Mama Khadija wants to ensure that the girl child is empowered.
Speaking to radio Islam, Sayyid of Mai Halima said a total of 50 students sat for the 2025 MSCE examinations and all of them passed with 15 selected to various universities up from 13 last year.
He added that two students who qualified for selection did not apply because currently one is pursuing her studies in Malaysia while the other at Holy Family college of Nursing.
Sayyidi revealed plans to ensure that the school increases its public university selection by among others reducing fees for those performing well in class and study circles.
“We have study circles, we have increased the use of library and we have plans to introduce a motivational initiative to allow best performing students pay lesser fees, and those that will be performing extremely well the director will consider removing the fees totally for her, and we are sure that this can help the students to perform even better”, he explained.
The head teacher thanked the school authorities for always providing teaching and learning resources on time
Islamic Educators Association of Malawi chairperson, Adil Chilungo, said it is encouraging that Islamic schools continue to perform well in national examinations and university selections.
“once the students have been selected into public universities they qualify for what I can call an advantage but then what we see is the schools are very secular, students who have doing well in secondary schools, they used to pray five times a day, they gazed and they used to wear the hijab but once they go to universities they take of the hijab and the five daily prayers they compromise, so these are the things that we should actually take guard”, Chilungo explained.
He has however, advised the schools to follow up on their students in universities to ensure that they maintain their Islamic values.
Reacting to the Muslim association of Malawi MAM’s warning that Islamic schools should be providing both Islamic and secular studies as most schools provide Islamic studies only, Chilungo advised Muslim Schools in the country to focus and ensure they are providing both Islamic and circular education so that the students can be exposed to the worldly knowledge.
He said if all the Islamic schools start providing both studies, the schools will also be outstanding just like other faith based secondary education institutions.
According to ministry of education, 10597 have been selected into six public universities which represents 36 percent of illegible candidates.
