The Malawi Government, through the Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralisation, has signed a protocol of agreement with the African Development Bank (AfDB) for a humanitarian emergency response to the 2025/26 lean season, amounting to one million US dollars which is approximately K1.73 billion.
Speaking during the signing ceremony held on Wednesday in Lilongwe, Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralisation Joseph Mwanamvekha expressed appreciation to the African Development Bank for the timely support through a grant from the Special Relief Fund.
Mwanamvekha said the assistance will make a meaningful contribution to the national lean season food insecurity response programme and help alleviate hunger among the most vulnerable communities.
He disclosed that the new administration is people-centred and understands the challenges Malawians are currently facing, including food shortages, fuel constraints, fertiliser challenges and foreign exchange shortages.
“Government is committed to ensuring that no Malawian dies of hunger, and you can agree with me that January to February Malawi experiences food shortage but this year, it’s a year of miracles and this is because our president is a visionary leader. You know food availability promotes good health, which is a fundamental driver of economic development”, he said.
The minister further assured that his ministry is fully committed to ensuring that the resources are utilised efficiently, transparently and strictly for their intended purpose.
In his remarks, African Development Bank Country Manager Macmillan Anyanwu said the Bank remains a trusted partner in addressing the impacts of climate change and strengthening resilience across various sectors.
Anyanwu added that the African Development Bank is committed to continuing its support for Malawi’s development agenda.
