Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) says over 32422 people approximately 7, 205 households have been affected by disasters in 13 councils of the country.
According to a press statement signed by Commissioner for DoDMA, Wilson Mollen, so far three people have died and 41 others have been injured mainly caused by collapsing walls.
Mollen said the affected councils are Blantyre district, Chikwawa, Chitipa, Dedza, Dowa, Karonga, Lilongwe city, Lilongwe district, Mulanje, Nkhata Bay, Nkhotakota, Nsanje and Salima.
He added that his office is currently reaching out to the affected with food and non-food items, which include maize, beans, blankets, pails and plastic sheets for temporary roofing.
Meanwhile, the department says has made standby arrangements for the deployment of a national search and rescue team comprising Malawi Defence Force, Malawi Police Service and Malawi Red Cross Society.
“DoDMA is also working with Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services and councils in disseminating early warning messages as the threat of flash floods remains high,” Mollen
He therefore advised councils to inform the department at the earliest opportunity in the event of any further emergencies.
The announcement comes following continuous rains experienced in most parts of the country, from 22nd to 28th December, 2025.
