Ministry of agriculture, irrigation and water development has announced the outbreak of Down Mildew disease DMD in Maize
According to the ministry the disease has been recorded in Blantyre and Machinga agriculture development divisions
In a press release secretary of the ministry Davis Sado says the disease has the potential to spread to other areas, causing significant yield losses.
Sado says DMD disease infects maize and other crops including sorghum, sugarcane and millet
Among the symptoms of the disease include “cobs failing to form, chlorotic stripes on leaves as early as 9 days after germination and maize plants infected die four weeks after infection,” says Sado
