Zimbabwean government has donated food and non-food relief items to the government of Malawi following declaration of a State of Disaster due to heavy rains and natural disasters.
Speaking during the handover in Lilongwe, Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Malawi and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, Dr Nancy Saungweme, said the donation reflects the strong and longstanding ties between the two countries, highlightIng the spirit of Pan-Africanism and regional solidarity within the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
“Malawi and Zimbabwe as you are aware we are just one family, we have got very strong ties, so obviously when the president heard of it that was the first place he wanted to help and that was Malawi”, she said.
She said her country shares a common goal with Malawi which is why they decided to come in and support the Malawian government in improving people’s welfare.
She said the consignment, which includes, cooking oil, blankets and other essential supplies, is meant to help ease the sufferings of communities affected by the floods adding more trucks are loading to assist more people.
Receiving the donation, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, George Chaponda, expressed gratitude to the Government and people of Zimbabwe for the timely assistance.
“From the president, the government and the people of Zimbabwe, they have shown that they are indeed a friend, they have come with trucks loaded with food and other items that will go very far to alleviate the suffering”.
Chaponda said the coming in of this donation, have closed the gap there was there in terms of relief to people who were affected by the effects of heavy rains and floods.
Chaponda therefore expressed hope that more countries and organisations will come in with their support, following the appeal by the country’s president Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika which went far and wide.
