Women Rights Groups March against Police Abuse.
Women have marched in Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi to express their anger on allegations that police raped and tortured women at Msundwe, M’bwatalika and Mpingu.
The march organised by Women Manifesto started at Kamuzu central round about to Lilongwe civic centre offices aimed at demanding justice on the issue
Days after the fracas happened on 8th October the nation received revelations that police officers molested women and girls in the three areas.
Today women rights groups led by women manifesto movement teamed up to march against police officers behind the sexual abuse
At Lilongwe Civic Offices they presented a petition to office of president, Ministry of homeland security and Ministry of gender, children, disability and social welfare.
The marchers have demanded government’s action on the issue.
In an interview member of women Manifesto movement Emma Kaliya said they organized the march to show their disappointment with what the police officers did because they are supposed to protect women and not harm them
“We ask authorities to act and investigate the matter so that those involved should face the law if the allegations are true,” Kaliya said
Notable faces at the march were EU ambassador to Malawi Sandra Paesen.
In her remarks Pearson said she joined the march to show that EU does not want women to be victims of violence.
The march has been held days after Human Rights Defenders Coalition HRDC called for independent investigator on the abuse.
HRDC made the call following the establishment of inquiry team by Malawi police service.
