Women Lawyers Petition Malawi President On Women In Cabinet
Women Lawyers Association of Malawi WLA has asked President Arthur Peter Mutharika APM to address concerns over the number of women that he has included in his cabinet.
President Muthalika last week reshuffled his cabinet and decreased the number of women ministers from 4 to 3, a development that has attracted condemnation from organizations championing for women’s rights.
In a letter addressed to APM, WLA says the recent cabinet appointments are irregular and unfair adding they have been made without regard to the interests of women in the country.
According to WLA, “Malawi has a number of qualified women who can ably serve as ministers therefore Muthalika’s decision is in violation of section 13 of the constitution which pushes for gender equality through participation of women.”
WLA is a nonprofit making organization comprising women lawyers with an aim of promoting and protecting human rights of women and children.
