Zomba Central Prison has intercepted six sim cards intended to be smuggled into the prison by Angella Sukali.
According to Lughano Buto Deputy Public Relations Officer for Zomba Central Prison the incident occurred on November 26 when Sukali brought food for inmate James Mkwacha, who is serving a 12-year sentence for robbery.
Sukali had concealed the sim cards inside boiled Irish potatoes, which were served with fried eggs and tomato stew.
However, Warder Esther Richard, Gatekeeper, noticed an anomaly in the food and when interrogated Sukali revealed that Mkwacha had promised to pay her rent if she smuggled the sim cards into the prison.
A phone used by the two to communicate was also confiscated from inside the prison.
