Vendors at Ulongwe market have stopped paying fees to force Balaka District Council to improved drainage system
One of the vendors, Sanud Tambula confirmed the development to Radio Islam saying construction of Liwonde-Mangochi road left the market with no drainage structures and curvets, which is worrisome to business personnel as water floods into their shops when it rains.
Tambula expressed concern over the health of market users in terms of hygiene since the council is failing to keep it clean.
“Because of those issues the vendors have since Saturday agreed not to pay their market fees until their demands are met,” said Tambula
However, Balaka District Council has described the development as sad considering that its revenue also depends on market fees.
The council’s Public Relations Officer Mary Makhiringa, said they are waiting for roads authority to address the situation, saying it its within their jurisdiction.
