UDF, Leader Of Opposition Condemn Police And MCP Supporters’ Attack on Demonstrators
United Democratic Front UDF has condemned undemocratic crackdown on peaceful demonstrators
The condemnation comes a day after a gang attacked and police fired teargas on concerned citizens in Lilongwe who wanted to hold demonstrations to force president Chakwera to resign
A statement signed by UDF national publicity Secretary Yusuf Mwawa says is unfortunate that instead of protecting unarmed and peaceful protesters Malawi police service sided with the thugs to deny citizens their right
The party says it is high time police desist from being used by politicians who have no regard to human rights and freedom
UDF has requested human rights groups to join force to denounce undemocratic tendencies
Meanwhile, leader of opposition in parliament has written a letter to President Chakwera over political violence perpetrated by MCP supporters
Kondwani Nankhumwa says the wave of political violence orchestrated by supporters of Chakwera’s party has caused significant harm to innocent Malawians
According to Nankhumwa is troubling that violence perpetrated by MCP operatives is deeply alarming as almost 24 months remain to hold general elections
Therefore he has urged the president to take immediate action to address the breaches of peace and hold the culprits accountable
The leader of opposition has warned to engage international community and join next generation if Chakwera does not address the concerns
