UDF engages MEC on Voter Registration, Elections

United Democratic Front has engaged Malawi Electoral Commission MEC to address key issues regarding voter registration and preparation for next year’s general elections

UDF President Atupele Muluzi held discussions with MEC chair Anabel Mtalimanja and chief elections officer Andrew Mpesi among other officials

Deputy Publicity Secretary of UDF, Labana Chilungo says they are pleased that MEC has shown willingness to listen to their feedback and consider to change some of the issues raised.

Labana said their main agenda was to understand why MEC is insisting on using the Smart mantic machine which many have raised concerns that it may be used to rig elections.

He says they were assured that MEC will use the manual counting of ballot papers hence satisfied with the response.

However, UDF says they have put their minutes of the meeting in writing and should MEC do otherwise they will stand to defend the country’s hard earned democracy.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting communications officer of MEC Richard Mveriwa said the meeting allowed UDF representatives to voice their concerns and clarify the role of Election Management Devices EMD’s in enhancing electoral efficiency

Meanwhile, UDF president has told Malawians that the only way to get rid of the challenges they are facing is to go and register in large numbers and vote in next year’s elections

Muluzi said this when he attended a final foodtbal bonanza match which was organised by Member of Parliament for Mangochi Nkungulu Aisha Mambo Adams in Traditional Authority Chimwala

He reiterated that UDF will not form alliance with any political party but with Malawians to win the elections come September 2025

Muluzi stresses that during the UDF led government under the leadership of Dr Bakili Muluzi this country has everything and citizens had money in their pockets which they were using to overcome any challenge

In her speech Adams who is also second deputy speaker of parliament thanked the UDF president for supporting her constituency considering his tight schedule

However she refuted rumours by some failed politicians that she has taken the party to Malawi Congress Party describing it as a big lie because partnering with the current ruling party is not a viable option
