Three jailed for endangering people’s safety in M1 road
Ntcheu First Grade Magistrate Court has sentenced Daviko Chiudzu, 27, to nine years Imprisonment with Hard Labour and four years each to Yona Barnet, 29, and Alfred Yokoniya, 27, for intentionally endangering safety of persons travelling by road.
State Prosecutor Sub Inspector James Luwani told the court that during the night of 2nd to 3rd April, 2022, at Kachipeya area in Ntcheu, along Lilongwe Blantyre M1 Road, Chiudzu and others blocked the road by placing big rocks across it with intent to injure or endanger safety of persons travelling by road.
It was further heard that the three unlawfully damaged a windscreen of a motor vehicle valued at K450, 000.
Appearing before court, the three denied the charged levelled against them, prompting the State to parade three witnesses.
In mitigation, the three asked for leniency citing that they are breadwinners for their families.
In submission, Inspector Luwani asked the court for a stiffer punishment saying behavior of the convicts could have led to fatal road accidents, prohibit people to own properties and do business.
Therefore First Grade Magistrate Chimdima Phiri sentenced Chiudzu who hails from Hauya Village, Barnet from Kaiya Village, and Yokoniya from Kamko Village, all from Traditional Authority Chakhumbira in Ntcheu district.
