TAML clarifies on Malawi Teas exportation prices to UK, Japan

Tea Association of Malawi TAML has refuted social media claims that Malawi teas are exported to United Kingdom at 1.2 dollars to be re-exported to Japan at a higher price of 4 dollars

In a press release chief executive officer for TAML Tonda Chinangwa says Malawi produces 45 million kilograms of black CTC tea annually which is processed and packed for export and less than 10 percent is consumed locally

According to Chinangwa last year Malawi exported 378, 640 kilograms of the tea to japan and Japanese market primarily favours other tea types which are not produced in Malawi

Chinangwa says the association continues to explore the possibility of producing these tests for specific export to Japan and other markets

He said UK imports various tea types from different origins not solely Malawi and specific date on Malawi’s tea exports to UK is available upon request
