There is heavy presence of police and soldiers in the cities of Blantyre, Lilongwe and Mzuzu.
This happens after Supreme Court of appeal ordered Human Rights Defenders Coalition HRDC not to organize demonstrations for 14 days.
According to our reporter in Blantyre some shops including Shoprite have been closed.
Public Relations officer for Malawi Police Service James Kadadzera has confirmed the presence of security personnel in the cities.
Meanwhile HRDC says it finds necessary to follow Supreme Court order to engage with attorney general on matters as directed.
In a statement HRDC Chairperson Timothy Mtambo and national coordinator Gift Trapence say they will announce new dates for the demonstrations outside the prescribed 14 days.
“HRDC will not relent until chairperson of Malawi Electoral Commission Justice Dr Jane Ansah resigns,” they said
Mtambo and Trapence say Malawians are free to demonstrate with or without HRDC as long as it is within the armpit of the law.
The coalition planned the demonstrations from Wednesday to Friday after High court stopped its planned shutdown at airports and borders from August 26 to 30.
However, Attorney general Kalekeni Kaphale applied to Supreme Court of appeal against the demonstrations because they had been violent hence injuring innocent people and damaging property.
